DUSSEHRA – THE TRIUMPH OF GOOD OVER EVIL Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a sacred festival celebrating the victory of good over evil and righteousness over wrongdoing. It commemorates the victory of Lord Shri Ram over the demon king Ravana, symbolising the power of truth, courage and dharma. The festival also celebrates Maa Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, marking the triumph of divine शक्ति (Shakti) over the forces of darkness and injustice. It falls on the tenth day of Navratri, bringing the nine days of devotion and celebration to a close. Dussehra is celebrated with Ram Leela performances, the ceremonial burning of Ravana’s effigy, prayers and cultural festivities. In many traditions, it is also a time to honour the tools and instruments through which we work and serve society. The message of Dussehra is timeless: no matter how powerful evil may appear, truth and righteousness will ultimately prevail. It reminds us to overcome negativity within ourselves, uphold moral values, follow the path of dharma and spread peace, compassion and harmony in our lives and communities.
